Discovery Energy ยท Billing Error Library

Estimated reads and missed true-ups

An estimated read error is a bill based on an estimated meter reading that is never properly reconciled to actual usage. Related problems include overlapping billing periods and the same charge billed twice. They distort cost, budgets and emissions reporting alike.

What to look for

  • Read-type codes showing estimates for several consecutive periods.
  • A large catch-up bill after a run of estimates, with no breakdown.
  • Billing periods that overlap or leave gaps.
  • The same charge on a paper bill and a portal bill.

Why bill-by-bill review catches it

When every bill is reviewed before payment, as in Discovery's bill pay service, estimates and duplicates are caught the month they appear instead of at the next annual review.

Questions buyers ask

How do I know a read was estimated?

Most bills mark the read type with a code or the letter E next to the reading. Several estimated reads in a row on the same meter deserve a call to the utility.

Do estimated reads always correct themselves?

They should when an actual read follows, but true-ups are missed, misapplied or spread across periods in ways that hide the error.
